CamelCase Hashtags – Essential for Social Media Accessibility.

16 September 2022

In today’s digital age, where an effective hashtag strategy is crucial for expanding your online social media presence, CamelCase hashtags have emerged as a fundamental tool for enhancing accessibility and engagement. There has been much debate recently about hashtags, but one thing is for certain, hashtags still matter.  They make your content discoverable by platform users, giving them the chance to engage with your content. CamelCase hashtags are really easily to implement, it is when you capitalise the first letter of each word of the hashtag instead of leaving it all lowercase.

An example of this would be ‘#LondonBasedDentist’ instead of ‘londonbaseddentist’.

It’s called CamelCase because the capital letters are taller than the lowercase letters. So it can be thought to resemble the humps of a camel.

Why is this style of hashtags important?

CamelCase hashtags make your social media content more accessible to user who use screen readers!

A screen reader is a form of assistive technology that reads out text and image content as speech or renders it as braille. People who may use screen readers include blind people, people with partial sight, dyslexic people, or simply people who enjoy using screen readers.

Unfortunately, the screen reader cannot decipher hashtags that are written in lowercase because it cannot pick up individual words. If you’re not using CamelCase hashtags, you could be limiting the number of people who can access your content.

Is it really essential that I use CamelCase hashtags?

Let’s face it, on social media we use hashtags so frequently now. They have become an easier way to communicate and they help us to decipher through the millions of other posts we see and filter them so that we are only consuming what we actually want to.

With so many hashtags we can use, we can often find them getting longer and longer to the point that they become difficult to read. This is especially true if you’re using up to 30 hashtags on an individual post!

As mentioned previously, hashtags are important to your dental social media strategy and the use of them is important, especially if you have created a hashtag purposely for your brand or even an upcoming event or collaboration.

The easier it is to read, the easier it is for people to access it and consequently engage!

This technique is simple, accessible, and will help your audience – so what’s not to love?
